In VOICE and Music

at Pah Homestead

Saturday, April 2, 5-7pm Cost: $5

Auckland’s most distinctive voices are converging on the TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre, bringing dynamic poetry and musical performances.

The next In VOICE and Music is at Pah Homestead is on April 2, 5pm, with poets Tim Heath, James Crompton and Michael Botur accompanied by musicians Anna Kaye and Miho Wada. The ornate Pah Homestead is Auckland’s architectural jewel, located at the crest of Monte Cecilia Park, 72 Hillsborough Road.

James, Anna, Tim, Michael and Miho are all experienced performers in the Auckland arts scene…

James Crompton is a host of Poetry Live and has had several poems published in various journals such as Tongue in Your Ear and Live Lines. In May, he is releasing a selection of poems entitled Autumn.

A stalwart of the live music scene in Auckland, singer and songwriter Anna Kaye puts a fresh face on the folk-pop genre with her blend of sublime and sometimes quirky originals. Anna Kaye has released an EP, Little Bonfire, featuring her band The Engineers.

Tim Heath has had three stories broadcast by Radio NZ, poems published in various magazines and success in poetry slams. Tim has written a novel and in 2009 completed the Masters of Creative Writing course at AUT.

When Michael Botur gets sick of sitting in his armchair writing fiction, he gets up and performs poetry. Botur is currently working on a case of beer and a new novel. Botur writes for Auckland arts magazine RenegadeHouse.co.nz.

Miho Wada is a well-established multi-instrumentalist and singer from Japan/New Zealand. She has performed around the world touring with many groups. She has recorded with Iggy Pop, performed with Jarvis Cocker, Nigel Kennedy, members of Buena Vista Social Club and Sierra Maestra. She has also been mentored by Seun Kuti and toured around the world with Ska Cubano.

Penny:

I was a ‘closet’ writer for a number of years, and finally in 1998 I was accepted to do a writing paper at Victoria University with Bill Manhire, and went on to complete a BA in English and Writing Studies at the University of Auckland as a mature part-time student. During that time I became interested in reading my own work at Poetry Live, The Lounge (Michele Leggott’s poetry readings at University) Rhythm & Verse at Lopdell House, the Pah Homestead, and other local venues. I have been published in Raewyn Alexander’s Magazine ; Sidestream, Live Lines, PotRoast, Blackmail Press, and The Bridge Project on NZEPC I am currently one of four MC’s at Poetry Live at the Thirsty Dog.

Sali:

Zambian-born Sali moved to England when she was 11 and to New Zealand when she was 16. Being part of the diaspora has been a strong influence on her writing which was originally inspired by her nurse mother and military turned probation officer father. More recently poetry has become an essential way of exploring and expressing her experience of being an immigrant in a culture unfamiliar with Africa.

The White Wall
“The White Wall”: poetic-kinetic-sculpture improv movement troupe engaging with their immediate environment in a very unique way. Their performances are candid and responsive. “The WW” are moving in nature and reflecting that through movement and stillness. Nature!… whether it is the urban nature or the green nature or human nature or…

After a series of successful performances around Auckland in 2010, this March – Printable Reality is bringing their Multimedia Poetry Extravaganza to Ponsonby. Stellar line up of Auckland performance poets, musicians and dancers enhanced by magnificent visuals, will stage a full colour rainbow at the Whitespace.

The first of the bi-monthly live In VOICE and Music performance evenings kicks off with a special appearance from the AUT Dance Company and a line-up of poets and musicians on Thursday, March 10, 8PM at a popular art spot in Crummer Road.

Whitespace, a contemporary art gallery located in Ponsonby, presents a vigorous program of exhibitions throughout the year showing established and emerging artists.
Poets include Jerry Beale, Gus Simonovic and Kirsten Warner from the Printable Reality spoken word group which is hosting the series. Musicians are Kotaro Nishishita, Dubtext and Gareth Price. Video images by Peter Brierley-Millman.

Audience can expect to become part of the art as it happens, because it may be hard to distinguish the gallery’s sculptures from some of the other performers.
Poetic-kinetic-sculpture improvisational troupe The White Wall will be responding to the gallery space, art, people and nature, “and that means urban nature, green nature or human nature,” says dancer Siri Embla of The White Wall. “We relate – we make connections –stories, poems, sculpture … in a moment. We breathe – we are still – we move – we keep moving. ”

In 2011, spoken word specialists Printable Reality brings a selection of poetry, music and dance to the Whitespace.

Printable Reality and Emma Skellern presents Prosad. With special guest: Tabla Maestro, Basant Madhur.

Listen and be soothed by the sacred sounds of the sitar. The compositions, called “ragas” have evolved for thousands of years. When learned from a master and followed with strict accuracy, the ragas have the ability to affect the central human nervous system and evoke many different moods or “Navarasa”. Sitar music has the proven ability to transport the listener into a meditation and a deep feeling of tranquillity.

Trance sitar is an organic fusion of sitar, electronic dance beats, live drumming, didgeridoo, world instruments and vocals. It is both meditative and energising at the same time. Listeners and dancers alike can feel the “calm centre” created by the meditative sitar, while moving at a whirlwind pace to the dance beats created by the band. The inner and outer meet and harmonise in this unique musical experience.

About Prosad:
Visiting New Zealand from Canada, Prosad is a world musician, singer-songwriter and composer who plays a multitude of instruments. For ten years he studied sitar in Toronto and India with two sitar masters and has performed his music from coast to coast while touring Canada as well as in Byron Bay, Australia. Musical projects are wide ranging and include trance sitar, (sitar mixed with electronic music), classical sitar, singer-songwriter projects and music for yoga and meditation. Prosad’s songs have been used in multiple feature length films including the Hollywood movie, ‘The Love Guru’ with Mike Myers. Prosad’s interests include surfing, world travel, martial arts, yoga and meditation. The quest for freedom in all forms inspires his life and music.

Prosad has shared the stage with internationally acclaimed musicians in the Toronto-Indo-Jazz Festival and performed at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. In 2007 Prosad was the guest soloist in the North American Debut of “Legend of Sangeet” for Brass Orchestra and Sitar. In 2008 Prosad performed for His Royal Highness Prince Edward, of the British Realms. In 2009 he was featured at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia with nearly 20,000 people in attendance. Prosad has independently released and promoted three CDs of original music.

is the last angry man, he was the first one too. He doesn’t ride a bike that doesn’t have brakes. He doesn’t get stuck in traffic. He doesn’t use phrase like ‘l-o-l” and doesn’t tell people about his new kettle on facebook. He does not believe in fairies (plop!). He does write! He writes about all dinosaurs and cycling and traveling and breasts and being angry and being happy and sex at inappropriate times. He performs! Well. He does come from Melbourne…
he is on his way …
